Rats: Porches, Decks, Trailers
How to Get Rid of Rats and Mice Under Porches, Decks, Trailers and Manufactured Homes. Organic Rodent Control Methods.
I never regretted purchasing a double wide manufactured home until a rat infestation hit my trailer park. Little did I know, elevated structures like decks and house trailers provide ample shade and protection for small animals to nest. My breaking point came when the rats chewed a hole in the insulation under the master bathtub, causing a $1,000 repair bill. My handyman warned me that rodents are heat seekers. They would soon get into my home if I didn’t control the problem. I thought about using poisons, but I didn’t want to end up with dead rats rotting under my home. In addition to the awful smells, dead rodents attract ants, cockroaches and other bugs which can EASILY filter up into elevated homes.
To solve the problem, I turned to cedar granules. I began by spreading a two foot wide band around the base of my home. I was too squeamish to go crawling under the trailer, so I opened the skirting along the back of my house and used a large shovel to toss the cedar granules underneath. Each day, I went outside with my shovel and tossed more insecticide granules under a different section of the home. I later learned that I could have put the granules in a spreader meant for distributing fertilizer and lawn seeds. That would have resulted in a more even job. I also could’ve hired my handyman to come back and spread the granules under my trailer, but I was broke after the insulation repair.
I was shocked by how quickly things changed around my yard. In less than a week, I stopped hearing noises under my home. I could finally sit outside and enjoy the sunshine without random rodent sightings. Several months later, when my handyman came back to replace the heat tapes on my pipes under the trailer, he told me that the insulation was in good condition. No more animal attacks!

Pest controlling aromas recharge when it rains. We apologize in advance for the dead bugs in your puddles. Cedar oil pesticides are very well tolerated by humans and dogs. In fact, many organic flea sprays and mosquito repellents contain cedar oil. Dog houses are often made of cedar wood because of its ability to control fleas. Cats may exhibit sensitivity to all pesticides containing essential oils, including our organic cedar pesticides. Cats are also highly sensitive to chemicals because of their fragile livers. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies cedar oil as a low risk pesticide. Permethrin—the chemical most pest control operators use against insects—is classified as a likely carcinogen.
