Cockroaches
How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Without Chemicals Using Our Organic Roach Spray
Step One: Evaluate Conditions Outdoors
Before implementing ANY roach control program, take some time to learn the nature of cockroaches so that you can eliminate them at the source. It is often assumed that cockroaches arise from filthy homes, but that’s not necessarily true. The roaches crawling around your home did not ORIGINATE there. They did not magically grow from the mold in your shower or rise out of the greasy reside inside your oven. They came from your yard and made their way through cracks, vents, drainage pipes and other openings you may not be aware of. If you don’t live in an apartment, roach activity in the home is a sure sign of excessive roach activity in your yard. If animals reside on your property, their food and waste can serve as a powerful attractant to many types of insects, including cockroaches. No matter how clean your home is, excessive roach activity on the property can easily spread indoors.
Even if roach activity is light, treat it aggressively. A small infestation can quickly grow out of control. Store pet food in large airtight containers, and don’t set out seeds or breadcrumbs for birds and squirrels. Double bag your garbage, and don’t leave open cans sitting around. Search for cracks around basement windows and seal them. Hunt for cracks along pipelines and door frames. Spray gutters, roofs and all outdoor entrances with our outdoor concentrate (PCO Choice). One quart makes eight gallons of solution. The solution kills on contact and leaves a protective barrier that encourages new insects from entering sprayed territory for up to a month. A good yard treatment early in the summer will help kill eggs and nests and prevent insect populations from exploding later in the season.
Step Two: Treat Indoors
Spray the inner walls and shelves of kitchen cabinets and drawers. Be sure to hunt for cracks and crevices along windows, door frames, ceilings and baseboards. If you live in an apartment, get to know the hot spots where your neighbor’s kitchens and bathrooms intersect with your walls. Pay special attention to decorative moldings that cover the area where walls and ceilings meet. Flush drains with scalding hot water to prevent cockroaches from entering your home through pipelines. This is especially important in apartment buildings.
It is common practice to apply pesticide powders such as boric acid and diatomaceous earth above cabinets and under appliances. When using such powders, PLEASE BEWARE. They simply aren’t suitable for use inside cabinets where dishes are stored. Furthermore, young children and pets have a tendency to squeeze themselves into unintended places and sample unintended substances. Save powders for use ABOVE cabinets so that they won’t come in contact with pets, children, cookware, dishes and utensils. Use our organic indoor treatment INSIDE cabinets, food pantries and drawers. Not only does it kill cockroaches on contact, it has powerful residual effects that prevent new insects from entering sprayed territory. (Do not spray this or any other pesticide product into an oven or near a pilot light.)
When applying cedar oil, beware that it can stir up roach activity and open a floodgate. Roaches that get a direct shot will die immediately. Insects residing near sprayed areas will be driven out of hiding. Don’t be alarmed if you tend to see more roach activity after treatment. It’s just a sign that our product is doing its job. To catch roaches fleeing from sprayed areas, place standard retail glue traps around the house.
Frequent vacuuming is another vital weapon in the war against roaches. Be sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter! Traditional vacuum cleaners are known to distribute all types of particles into the air. Roaches carry disease pathogens including (but not limited to) salmonella, streptococcus, E. coli, dysentery, hepatitis B, plague, and cholera. Children living in homes infested by roaches are known to have chronic asthma problems. When choosing furnace filters at the store, don’t go cheap. Select special filters that are proven to remove allergens from the air.
Plenty of chemical pesticides are available for the home and yard, but such products are widely regarded as dangerous. In February of 2011, USA Today ran an article titled “Exposure to Pesticides in Womb Linked to Learning Disabilities.” The study focused on Peremethrin, a chemical commonly used to battle household pests. As disturbing as this sounds, the topic is nothing new. Scores of scientific studies have linked chemical pesticides to breast cancer, neurological disorders and birth defects in children living near farms where chemicals are sprayed. Even pyrethrum based insecticides derived from chrysanthemums are not as safe as once believed. According to an E.P.A. survey of poison control centers, they cause more insecticide poisoning incidents than any other pesticides except for organophosphates.
Due to widespread controversy over traditional insect control methods, our organic cedar oil formula has gained increasing popularity and respect in the pest control and organic farming communities. In 2006, at the request of the U.S. Army, a team of world renowned organic scientists expanded upon traditional cedar oil formulations by introducing a quartz rock carrier to deliver a lethal dose of substance at the microscopic level. This nano-sized delivery system closes the breathing pores of pheromone driven insects on contact and creates a lasting a barrier that discourages new insects from entering sprayed territory.
Our outdoor formula is strong enough to battle crop pests on commercial farms yet safe enough to treat neighborhood yards for mosquitoes and venomous snakes. Our indoor formula is so gentle to humans and animals that it’s endorsed by Animal Wellness Magazine as a flea treatment and worn by U.S. soldiers to repel fleas, ticks, mites, lice and chiggers. Indoor cedar oil fogging techniques are particularly effective against bedbugs, ants and termites. The dry, hazy mist penetrates unseen cracks and crevices in a way that traditional spraying methods can’t duplicate. Fogging machines are exceptionally useful to those who live in apartment buildings where repeat infestations are common. The amount of money saved on repeat visits from exterminators can be astronomical.
